Winifred Johnson Brewer

The daughter of two Connecticut painters, Wini moved to The Brewery in 1984.  Since then her paintings have been exhibited through out Southern California in venues as diverse as Hollywood’s La luz de Jesus Gallery and the desert’s Palm Springs Art Museum.  She was awarded both a fellowship and a residency grant at the Vermont Studio Center.

Of her work Wini says, “The paintings end up totally worn away. Then I’ll feel the need to go back and paint a fresh, solid area here and there. But, I’ll go too far and paint over everything. Then I’ll start rubbing out again – pulling back – hoping to achieve a pleasing balance. I mustn’t stop too soon, nor go too far. The erased and beaten surfaces are an art process that reveals life process.”

Her eclectic work is in many private and corporate collections in the U.S., U.K., and Canada.

Transitions are exciting times for artists. Techniques evolving, materials changing, new imagery appearing, while older imagery has resolved  itself through repetition. Just for fun, this time my Brewery ArtWalk website images are a mini retrospective. I hope you’ll come visit. I’d love to meet you and show you what I am up to.
