Flor M Quinto
Growing up, Flor Quinto moved frequently from city to city, first within Mexico and then, ultimately, to Los Angeles. These constant upheavals gave her a deep interest in the history and meaning we assign to everyday objects, which she uses as a starting point to make her multimedia sculptural paintings. Flor approaches her work intuitively, often holding an object over the painting surface and moving it about until it feels right, something she likens to playing with a Ouiji board when she was young—but the moving force now, she says, is “pure emotion.” In her latest work, Flor is looking increasingly at the beauty of imperfection, being open to the controlled chaos her process yields and finding the vulnerability, honesty, and deeper truth latent in the objects she uses and in each finished piece. Every object has a story, often tied to uncomfortable or painful feelings, but by paying tribute to them and immortalizing them in resin or wax, Flor is able to discover a sense of healing, closure, and emotional release—a ritual of burial and rebirth all at once.
